Are Pumpkin Spice Cheerios Full Of Fall Vibes?

by | Oct 19, 2021 | Taste Tests

Craving more pumpkin spice in your day? Well now you can start it not only with a PSL, but a big bowl of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios too. These limited edition Cheerios capitalize on our seemingly never-ending craze for all things pumpkin spice. The question is—do they deliver and give all the feels for Fall vibes or are they just another underwhelming execution of one of Fall’s most popular flavors?

These days, it seems like literally everything under the sun gets the Pumpkin Spice treatment once late August rolls around. Lattes. Cookies and cakes. Air fresheners. Deodorants. Yep, you read that right folks. Deodorants, too.

And yet, I’m constantly a sucker for all of the pumpkin spice products. Just the other day, I was standing in line at the self checkout of the grocery store and there was an end cap featuring Fall flavored stuff. Being the sucker that I am, I gave everything a once over and then decided upon the Pumpkin Spice Cheerios.

I figured that even if they didn’t have enough pumpkin spice oomph, they’d still be tasty since I like Honey Nut Cheerios. Also, if they truly stunk, I could just use them to make marshmallow cereal bars spiffed up with some Fall spices.

So…are these Pumpkin Spice Cheerios a tasty limited edition treat or are they all just a bunch of little zeros in a cardboard box?

Taste Test Review Rating System

Trying out new things is always fun, but it’s honest and transparent reviews that really help us as consumers to make an informed decision. Given this, I will always be candid about how I feel about a product.

Every food product is reviewed on its Appearance, Taste, and Price. I take into account questions like, “Does it look IRL like it does on the packaging?”, “Would I go back for seconds?”, “Is this something I would share with others?”, and “Is this worth the price?”.

There’s no point system here—we don’t go through life judging whether something is a 3.7/10 or 7.8/10. We judge based on whether we like or don’t like something and whether we would or would not buy it again. So my rating system is simply four levels of appeal: Love it, Like it, Leave it, and Lose it.

Review of Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios – First Impressions

General Mills goes straight for it with the packaging on these Pumpkin Spice Cheerios in a big, bold, punch of orange! They definitely caught my attention. If the box hadn’t been displayed with other seasonal flavored items, I would’ve guessed from afar that they were Wheaties–that big orange box always catches my eye on the cereal aisle.

Seeing that big ribbon telling me that this is a Limited Edition flavor, I definitely started feeling a little FOMO. The Cheerios pictured on the box looked pretty much like regular ol’ Cheerios. I’m guessing that’s why they added the little picture of a pumpkin and cinnamon sticks to help make sure it was clear. Also, because some people are just too damn lazy to read. It’s visually appealing and very on-brand for modern Cheerios packaging.

Appearance – Do the Pumpkin Spice Cheerios Look as Advertised?

Once I got home and opened the box, I was quick to see that these Cheerios don’t look like just any ol’ Cheerios. The Pumpkin Spice Cheerios have a light pumpkin colored glaze like coating that is filled with cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. I was super happy to literally be able to see the speckles of these warming Fall spices on the cute lil “o’s”.

It gave me hope that they were going to live up to my pumpkin spice expectations and give me all of the Fall feels in every spoonful. The aroma emanating from the box was DELICIOUS! They smelled like a mix between honey nut flavored Cheerios and pumpkin pie, and I was there for it, y’all!

Taste – Do These Pumpkin Spice Cheerios Keep You Coming Back for More?

At first, I just ate one little “o” to dip my toe into the taste test waters. Then, I went back to the well for a handful to really get the full effect when they’re sans milk.

These Cheerios tasted more like Honey Nut Cheerios than the pumpkin pie vibes they were giving off. They’re a little sweeter than Honey Nut Cheerios, but the Fall spices definitely pull through to differentiate them from their more popular cereal sibling.

Next, I tried them with milk….since most people aren’t buying cereal as a snack and are gonna be eating it with milk. After adding the milk, it was as if the spiciness was dulled. Suddenly, these Cheerios totally tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios! What the heck, where did all of the spice and pumpkin go???!??! It’s not that they weren’t still tasty–they just weren’t as tasty.

By the time I was at my last spoonful of cereal, the orange glaze had all but disappeared from the “o’s” left in the bowl. I was hoping that the milk leftover would be spicy and pumpkin-y, but it just tasted faintly of the pumpkin and spices. Until the aftertaste, that’s when the pumpkin hit me. And it tasted like pumpkin. Not pumpkin pie. Not pumpkin spice. Just pumpkin that’s been cooked down and slightly sweetened.

And honestly, it was kinda delicious. Even if it was a very fleeting aftertaste.

Price – Are the Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios Worth It?

At my local big chain grocery store, this box of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios cost me $2.79. At the time, I thought they were on sale (which is one of the reasons I grabbed them instead of another pumpkin spice product). But on subsequent trips to the grocery store, they’re still going for that same $2.79 a box.

Looking around online and in person, it seems that other retailers are charging anywhere from a buck more a box (for a box twice the size of what I bought) to upwards of $10 for a “family size” box. At $2.79 for a 10.8 ounce box, I feel like I got a very fair price.

I liked that these were different enough from regular Cheerios that they felt special, like a small way to shake things up. I would definitely have paid a buck more for the box size that I bought. But there’s no way I’d be paying $10 for a 20 ounce box of cereal. For $10 bucks, I’d rather get more bang for my buck and grab a carton of eggs and a pack of sliced bacon.

Results — Love It, Like It, Leave It, or Lose It?

You can definitely tell that these Cheerios are not the honey nut variety. There’s a hint of pumpkin and they’re not overly sweet, but what was missing for me was that full-on pumpkin spice taste. I thought that the spices were nice and enjoyed that they came through so well in each bite, but wished that there was a better cohesion between the pumpkin and the spices. Instead, these Pumpkin Spice Cheerios were kinda weak sauce for me.

That said, I would probably buy these again. They give off enough fall flavor vibes to still be tasty and enjoyable. I even took a few cups of these Cheerios and made a small batch of pumpkin spice marshmallow cereal bar treats just for the hell of it.

Where You Can Find Pumpkin Spice Cheerios

You should be able to find Pumpkin Spice Cheerios at any major grocery chain location in your area. You can also find them online on through Target and Walmart.
