Chili Lime SunChips Are Made for Those Who Love Tajin

by | Feb 6, 2022 | Taste Tests

If you love the combination of smoky red chili peppers with bright, citrusy lime, then you’re going to totally love the savory, bold flavor of Chili Lime SunChips!

When it comes to food, I love trying new flavors and dishes. But I will always have a soft spot for Mexican food and any snack or dish that borrows flavor profiles from Mexican cuisine. Ok, well Mexican food as we Americans know it. I’ve never been to Mexico, but I’ve watched enough Rick Bayless videos on YouTube to know that we Americans have definitely taken traditional Mexican dishes and put our own spin on them.

Tajin’s been on the market for a long time, but it seems that the majority of us never quite realized how intertwined the earthiness of smoky peppers and citrus juices are within Mexican food. And once Tajin blew up in the mainstream (thanks social media!), the flavor combo of chili and lime is everywhere! Enter Chili Lime SunChips….

Taste Test Review Rating System

Trying out new things is always fun, but it’s honest and transparent reviews that really help us as consumers to make an informed decision. Given this, I will always be candid about how I feel about a product.

Every food product is reviewed on its Appearance, Taste, and Price. I take into account questions like, “Does it look IRL like it does on the packaging?”, “Would I go back for seconds?”, “Is this something I would share with others?”, and “Is this worth the price?”.

There’s no point system here—we don’t go through life judging whether something is a 3.7/10 or 7.8/10. We judge based on whether we like or don’t like something and whether we would or would not buy it again. So my rating system is simply four levels of appeal: Love it, Like it, Leave it, and Lose it.

Chili Lime SunChips First Impressions

These SunChips smell AMAZING!!! They look delicious too, but the smell when you first open the bag–good lord, it’s heavenly to anyone who loves this flavor combo. They’re a reddish orange that matches up with the idea of a whole grain chip being coated in smoked, dried peppers. To me, the coloring reminds me of when you coat a corn tortilla in a light layer of enchilada sauce; you get the specks of dried pepper poking through and that familiar reddish orange hue.

Appearance – Do the Chili Lime SunChips Look as Advertised?

The Chili Lime flavored SunChips live up to the hype that’s on their packaging. Their bright and bold reddish orange hue looks just like on the package. As you can see below, the seasoning is easy to see just as it is on the packaging. And, they have that signature ripple shape that is instantly recognizable of SunChips.

Compared to other SunChips flavors, they look a little “exotic” and “otherly”. But they also give off big “EAT ME!!” vibes.

Taste – Do Chili Lime SunChips Keep You Coming Back for More?

I’m a big lover of the chili and lime flavor combo, so I went into the taste test already a bit biased. I had expectations of what I thought SunChips’ version would taste like at first bite. While they didn’t blow me away initially (I was expecting a bit more spice and smoke), they were very good. Like if someone brought them to a party, I would be alllllllll up in that chip bowl; but, if I saw them again at the store, I may or may not buy them again depending on what I’m craving at the moment.

But as I ate more of them, and adjusted my expectations to what was actually in front of me (and in my mouth, haha), my perception changed. These Chili Lime SunChips are definitely their own signature version of this (now) classic flavor combo. And once my Tajin-craving tastebuds got the memo that these chips were not Tajin sprinkled on a SunChip, I could judge the flavor based on its own merits.

That said, I kept coming back for more…again and again and again, until the bag was empty and I was wishing I’d bought two instead of just the one.

Price – Are Chili Lime SunChips Worth It?

Chili Lime SunChips come in a standard 7-ounce bag and retail for between $3-3.50, depending on retailer. Compared to potato chips, SunChips have always been a bit more expensive. So, you’re likely to find at your local store that National brand potato chips cost less per ounce. The off-set in cost is typically justified by the fact that, technically speaking, SunChips ARE a healthier option than potato chips. SunChips are made of whole grains, which packs a bigger punch in fiber per serving AND they’re a bit lower in calories, giving them a better nutritional profile than standard potato chips.

If you’re looking for big, bold flavor, then $3.50 for a bag of chips is totally worth it. If you’re looking for a healthier chip option, the $3.50 per bag is also a win.

Results — Love It, Like It, Leave It, or Lose It?

I love the chili and lime flavor combo, so SunChips already started out ahead of the game. Their flavor is definitely unique even though it’s in the same vein as more popular chili lime flavored snack products. I thoroughly enjoyed these Chili Lime SunChips, but I can’t say that they fully lived up to the hype for me. I may or may not buy them again, but because there were a lot of things I liked about these SunChips, they earn a solid “Like It” and I recommend you try them yourself if it’s a flavor that intrigues you.

Where You Can Find Chili Lime SunChips

This flavor of SunChips appears to be widely available at brick and mortar retailers and grocery chains. You can also grab a bag online at the websites for retailers like Walmart, and Blain’s Farm and Fleet.
